PUSHKAR - FEBRUARY 8

We are driving to Pushkar today, about 165 km away from Jaipur, stopping on the way for tea or coffee.

Still lots of crazy traffic and beautiful colourful trucks. Sometimes, cows cross the road, but luckily drivers slow down…. They are holy cows after all and killing one would be an offence. In some places, killing or injuring one can bring someone to jail......

Once in Pushkar, we look for a hotel straight away. The ones mentioned in our guidebooks don’t have rooms for us, so we look for another one, right in the middle of town. It is called Natraj Guest House. The rooms are quite filthy, but there is a nice rooftop restaurant, from where we get beautiful views over the nearby temple, .....town, lake and the mountains around.

We stroll around in the city, which is a holy city, attracting many Hindu pilgrims. ... There are numerous temples and 52 ghats (stairs leading to a river or lake) where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters.

.We don’t get bothered too much by priests who try to give (or more accurately sell us) the so-called Pushkar passport, a red thread to be put around the wrist. Against this passport, the priest will say prayers. Of course, donation is required and this can be very hefty. Of course, we don’t have to “buy” the passport, but the priests can be quite pushy. Luckily, there are almost no priests at the ghats, so we can wander around freely.... Jocelyne takes her shoes off, as she wants to come close to the lake. As it is a sacred lake, one has to remove shoes to come close to it… Well, she has lots of pigeon shit under her feet afterwards. There are flocks of pigeons and as they get food, there are too many of them........

There are also many cows ..in Pushkar, wandering around the streets. Most of the city centre is closed to car traffic, but there are still many motorbikes or rickshaws and the noise is at high level though.

There are many beautiful houses, doors, shops......, the town being very touristy. ....with various colours. Still lots of electrical wires hanging everywhere. I would not like to be an electrician there, the network being so intricate.

We then have something to eat in a garden restaurant, by the pool… Luxurious!......

In the evening, for sunset, we take a walk to the Savitri Temple up a hill, in the outskirts of the city. From there, we get beautiful views over the countryside.........

Jassi even walks up the hill with us… There are many monkeys along the path and one is quite aggressive.

Then, we have a delicious dinner... Yummy!....
